Cashmere Thoughts · Working draft · Not a commitment

3–5 year North Star

Like buying a house in an area you love but can’t cash-buy tomorrow — know the streets, the prices people have paid to build, how you’d raise money, and what you’d do the week something comes up for sale.

Status: Working draft for Jamie → Yussef. No sellers contacted.
Updated: 2026-09-11

The dream (one sentence)

Own a real vinyl pressing plant so Cashmere Thoughts can press its own records — and turn that into a smart 3–5 year North Star, not a rushed purchase.

What “house-hunting” means here

House-hunting Vinyl plant equivalent
Know every street in the area Know every serious UK plant + who owns it
Know what sold nearby Know published build costs / rare sale clues (many prices stay private)
Know your deposit + mortgage path Know capital / partners / grants / debt options
Be ready to view + offer fast Diligence checklist + who says yes + what “good deal” looks like
Don’t buy the wrong fixer-upper Don’t buy a plant that eats the label’s release money

Today’s truth: We have not found a ready-made UK/EU plant publicly for sale with a clear price. So the work is readiness + watching the market.

Two ways the business can work

We keep both open. Volume is UNKNOWN until Label Manager / Jamie fill it in.

  1. Mostly for us — press Cashmere Thoughts (and close friends) first.
  2. Us + paying customers — press for other labels to help pay the machines.

Year by year

Year 1 — Get street-smart

Do: Keep the “for sale” watch (Mon/Thu checklist). Finish plain-English money model: rent (outsource) vs own (build/buy). Decide rough budget band with Jamie/Yussef (even a range). Optional: visit / soft relationships only after Jamie lifts the no-contact lock.

Don’t: Buy.

Year 2–3 — Get offer-ready

Do: Capital stack sketched (cash / partner / grant / debt). Preferred shape: England, press-only first (unless a rare full plant is a bargain). Diligence pack ready (building, kit, permits, staff, contracts). If a distressed or off-market plant appears — move like a prepared buyer.

Don’t: Buy steel until volume clears a hurdle set first. No turnkey fantasy without capital ready.

Year 3–5 — Own, build, partner — or walk

Paths: Buy a suitable plant / kit package; or build small (2–4 presses) once volume and capital justify it; or partner / joint venture if that’s smarter.

Measure success: Yussef’s records get pressed on time, label cash isn’t trapped in idle machines, story (“our plant”) is real.

Never: Let plant spend pause a Yussef release cycle.

Cheapest-entry path (Manager’s Playbook)

England first. Press-only first (buy stampers in). Full plating shop is harder / more regulated (big chemical baths can trigger heavier UK permits around the 30 m³ vat threshold).

What we need from Jamie / Yussef

Only when you’re ready — not blockers for research:

  1. Rough yearly vinyl ambition (even “a few releases / a few thousand copies” is fine).
  2. Comfort zone for money tied up for 3–5 years (ballpark band).
  3. Is the dream “our music only” or “our music + a real pressing business”?
  4. When (if ever) you’re OK with us quietly talking to brokers or machine makers.

Next concrete outputs

  1. This draft → tighten with advisor replies.
  2. One-page “offer readiness” checklist (like a conveyancing pack).
  3. Keep watching listings; alert only if a real plant or priced UK package appears.
  4. One-pager is live on this site’s home page. Full Notion/PDF when Jamie says go for Yussef.
